Beginnings

B eginnings. What an appropriate theme for this BSF study year. We face uncertainty. We face unfamiliarity. We face unknowns. Yet, in all these things our confidence rests on the One who began it all.  He is sure and certain. He is with us. He goes before us and stands behind us. He holds all things together. And, He is faithful.

In reflecting on these truths, I invited Debbie Young, Chief Curriculum Officer, to contribute the cover article for this month’s newly formatted AP/Class Staff bulletin blog. Please enjoy.

As we explore the book of Genesis together, may God fill you with expectant hope of exciting new  Beginnings  this coming year.”

From Debbie Young, Chief Curriculum Officer

“In the beginning, God…” The Bible opens with a booming thunderclap. Simple, yet profound words drive a stake in eternity that defines our purpose and direction. There was a beginning, an exact time when life as we know it began to emerge. At that distinct point in eternity past and for an infinite number of moments before, the Almighty God existed and reigned. And in His wisdom, by His will and through His power, God set in motion a universe, a world, a garden, and a people. The God of the beginning has never yielded His power to another. He still speaks. He still moves. He still reigns supreme. And we are wise to listen to Him.

We read those ancient words from a fast-paced, seemingly uncertain world that has often ignored the significance of that bold statement and all it represents. Mankind, enthralled with our puny insights and delusion of control, has stopped hearing the thunder of Genesis 1:1. The noise of life tries to drown out the booming truth that ultimately cannot be dismissed. And in 2020, a year where so many things feel like they are unraveling, we have the opportunity to turn up the volume on that thunder.

You face a beginning of your own – so much that looks entirely different than you anticipated. You enter a new BSF year with a loose grip on the familiar. You are conducting school, church, work, shopping, meals and life in unexpectedly different ways. We are all being forced to realize how little we actually control. That process can be uncomfortable. As we loosen our grip on what we cannot control, we tighten our grip on God, who has everything in control. He does not change. He does not let one electron move from the orbit He has ordained. He sets up kings and removes them according to His grand plans. He is not unsettled by political uncertainty, racial unrest or economic chaos. God’s work is not stopped by a virus, daunting or inefficient technology or by our weakness. God is the One we serve. He is strong when we are weak. He can be trusted.

God brings us to Genesis, the exact book He designed for us to study at this exact moment in human history. And in His wisdom, by His will and through His power, He will set your class and your life in motion. You will open this book of beginnings to find ancient truths that resonate in a world of uncertainty. Participating in the Genesis study gives you the incredible opportunity to connect with people who long for stabilizing truth amidst the confusion and the opportunity to find fellowship amidst the isolation. We step into a world crippled by a microscopic organism and threatened in so many ways. But we are prepared to speak hope and bring people together in rich and meaningful ways.

Will it look and feel different? It will. Will it require digging deep to trust God in uncharted territory? It will. But will God faithfully accomplish exactly what He has designed? HE WILL! God sustains what He sets in motion. Every star, planet, and electron remain in orbit because of His sustaining power. God, the great “I AM” will also sustain you. And, we are trusting God to sustain BSF despite the hardships of this time.

“In the beginning, God…” That powerful, purposeful thunderclap of hope accomplishes far more than opening the book of Genesis. God stands at this beginning with you. He will create energy, wisdom and strength in you for everything His call requires. He did not bring you to this distinct point in human history and in your story merely to frustrate and challenge you. He is presenting you with an opportunity to see His power like never before. May God’s thunder roar with new power, in new places and in new ways! Are you ready to see God work?

Children’s Program Safety

In every aspect of the BSF Children’s Program, we prioritize the safety of our participants; whether meeting in person or online. Here are a few safety updates and reminders as you kick off the BSF year:

  • REMINDER: Every leader must complete the required background screening and yearly recertification to be placed in a class with children.
  • UPDATE: While TLs maintain oversight and ultimate responsibility for safety compliance, the process for acquiring and documenting the screening and recertification can now be delegated to any member of the Class Staff.
    • TLs, STLs, CAs, and CSs in North America now have individual accounts with contracted background screening companies to assist in this process.
  • UPDATE: AP Validation columns/boxes are available now on the TL Checklist for Children’s Program Personnel screening within the TL Checklists on each class website. These validation columns/boxes provide a new layer of manageable oversight. AP should review and validate the compliance of every leader and regular volunteer in each TL Checklist at the beginning of every study year and upon every class visit. We appreciate and value AP assistance to maintain compliance by upholding our high standards.

Thankful for “Bereans”

We are grateful for BSF leaders who cherish and uphold the holiness and integrity of God’s Word!

In the opening of the Vision Session of this year’s Summit, the narrator cites what may appear as God’s command regarding the tree in the middle of the garden. As some leaders have correctly pointed out, in the cited passage (Genesis 3:3) Eve added to God’s command (from Genesis 2:17) in her encounter with the serpent, in which she says, “God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”

Please know the citation was meant to represent a portion of the Fall rather than to give God’s direct command.

Thank you to those who expressed your concern, which reminds us of “the Berean Jews” in Acts 17:11, who “received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” With discerning leaders such as you, BSF is in wonderful, God-honoring hands.

Tips

Are they Characters or People?

J uliet Capulet. Sherlock Holmes. Elizabeth Bennett. Atticus Finch. Princess Leia. Iron Man.

What do all of these people have in common? They are fictional characters. Some of their stories are more realistic than others, but none of them are real people who walked on this earth. They exist only in books, movies, TV shows, and/or our imaginations.

When I hear the word “character,” I immediately associate it with fiction. Many of you might, as well. For this reason, we are phasing out our use of it in reference to actual people in the Bible. David is not a character. Mary is not a character. Paul is not a character. They were real people. We want to make it perfectly clear to our class members – especially children – that these people they are reading and hearing about are not figments of a writer’s imagination. They walked and talked on the same planet where we live and breathe today.

You’re probably asking, “Well, then what do we say instead?” That’s a good question, and the answer can vary. Here are some examples of how this might play out in the classroom:

  • Instead of asking, “What character said …?” ask, “What person in this Bible story said …?” or even simply, “Who said …?”
  • Instead of saying, “List all the main characters we have talked about in Genesis so far,” say, “List all the key people we have talked about in Genesis so far.”
  • Instead of asking, “Which character in this Bible story do you best relate to?ask, “Which person in this Bible story do you best relate to?

Not using “character” means our language may be a little awkward and clunky at times when we need to replace it with “person in the Bible.” But we prefer awkward and clunky in this situation, as it will avoid any potential confusion.

Now here’s the tricky part. Throughout the Genesis study, you will sometimes see or hear the word “character” used in relation to the real people in the Bible. You will find us doing exactly what we are telling you not to do. Why? First, because we decided to make this change after much of Genesis was already in its final form. And second, because we at HQ are humans, and we don’t remember all things at all times. We mess up. And you probably will too. It’s OK if you call Joseph a character because you forgot. Don’t worry about it. Just make a mental note to call him a person the next time. And marvel at the fact that he truly was a real person just like you and me!

ENCOURAGEMENT

SUMMIT 2020

C ongratulations, team. Summit 2020, a time for our 50,000 leaders around the world to virtually gather together, has kicked off the Beginnings of a new study. We hope this year’s event helped ignite a renewed and blazing passion to lead others through God’s Word.

As you know, this year’s edition, our second Summit, was not what was originally planned. But, oh, how you have pivoted and responded to the challenge. Your leadership in this and in all aspects of your calling gives witness to our great God and encouragement to the men and women you lead. We at Headquarters are grateful for your dedication and love for God and His people. You are the backbone of this vibrant ministry.

As we are in the early planning stages of Summit 2021, we appreciate your prayers for another God-glorifying event. We’re excited to see what He has in store. And we will keep you posted as this next edition gains shape.

Stories from the field

BSF ONLINE

Celebrating God’s Work

T he BSF Online Team so appreciates your support and prayers. Forty-three individuals recently completed Online Trainer Orientation (OT) and are now ready to serve God and His people in their new OT role. Here are just a few comments the OTs shared during the closing orientation session.

If you have faith of a mustard seed”—God reminded me that all I needed was the faith of a mustard seed and He would show me the next step.”

I was feeling so inadequate. My thoughts were all about “can I”—all about me. I learned it’s all about God. I need to be a willing servant and now have confidence from Him.”

I had never done anything online and I didn’t know what it was going to be like. I couldn’t imagine engagement and connection with other men online. This has been amazing. I believe this is what works. Now I believe it can be done.

Now I feel like I have friends all over this screen. I especially have 7 guys that I feel like I could tell something specific about each one of them. All are my friends, my brothers.  I know I can reach out to any one of them for help.

Prayers to all BSF Leaders and Participants as we begin a new year of studying His Word. Please keep me in prayer, my husband is recovering from having Covid … fortunately a mild case with no hospitalization. It has been a rough 5 weeks, but we are on the “homefront” now. He is doing well and now has what they call “Immune Response” … but almost back to full recovery. Our God is amazing.” – Judy Barker
